A flanged globe valve is a type of industrial valve. It can be used for flow control, throttling and as a shut off valve for pipelines. A flanged globe valve is typically used for applications where more control over the fluid flow.

It is called a flanged globe valve because it has flanged ends, which allows the valve to be bolted between two flanged pipes, both ends being of matching configuration.

What Is a Flanged Globe Valve?

In process piping, the flanged globe valve is used to control the flow of liquids, gases, steam and other industrial media. The disk or plug is an internal component which travels against a fixed seat within the valve body.

In comparison to other types of valves that are designed to be fully open or fully closed, such as ball valves or butterfly valves, the globe valve is used to control the flow of a liquid. For control of processes, a flanged globe valve is the ideal choice as it is reliable and can be used in a variety of applications.

How Does a Flanged Globe Valve Work?

A flanged globe valve works by moving a disc, plug, or other type of regulating element towards or away from the valve’s seat. When the handwheel or valve actuator turns the stem of the valve, the disc moves in a straight line. As it travels upwards, the flow passage opens up. As it travels back down, the flow passage gets smaller until the valve is fully and completely shut.

Rugged Body Construction

The body contains the connection points for the inlet and outlet as well as the seat, disc, stem, bonnet and packing.

The body of a control valve is designed to create a fixed flow path through the valve. The fluid flow entering the valve turns within the valve body and passes through the seat of the valve and exits the valve through the outlet. This design provides the best regulation for most applications and has more pressure drop than a straight through valve.

Flanged End Connections

Flanged end connections are a major advantage of flanged globe valves. A flanged globe valve is typically installed in flanged end connections by bolting the ends of the valve to matching end connections on the pipe, with gaskets between the sealing faces of the pipe ends and the ends of the valve. This connection is strong enough to withstand considerable force and is readily removable for maintenance or other reasons.

Common flange types include:

1. Raised face flange

2. Flat face flange

3. Ring type joint flange

4. Standard pressure-rated pipe flange

5. Custom flange connection for project requirements

Valve Body Material Selection

The choice of materials has a significant effect on the performance of a valve, its safety and service life. When selecting materials for a flanged globe valve, due consideration must be given to the working medium, the pressure, temperature, corrosion etc. and the environment in which the valve will be installed. Using the wrong materials can lead to problems with corrosion, leakage, cracking, erosion etc. which could lead to a short service life.

Common valve body materials include:

1. Cast iron for general water and low-pressure service

2. Ductile iron for stronger water and utility applications

3. Cast steel globe valve for industrial pressure systems

4. Stainless steel for corrosion resistance

5. Forged steel for compact high-pressure applications

6. Bronze or brass for selected water and low-pressure systems

Industry Applications

  • Water Treatment Systems
  • Steam and Condensate Lines
  • Chemical Processing Plants
  • Oil and Gas Pipelines
  • Power Generation Systems
  • HVAC Systems
  • Fire Protection Networks
  • Food and Beverage Plants
  • Pharmaceutical Facilities
  • Marine and Shipbuilding Projects

Choose the correct valve size for the best performance. A properly sized globe valve helps improve flow control, reduce pressure loss, and extend service life.

FAQS

What is a flanged globe valve used for?
Why are globe valves good for throttling?

Globe valves are particularly suited for throttling service because the disc gradually closes against the seat. Such valves are better for throttling than most other types of valves which are designed as on-off control devices.
